mean, joe biden told us he's focusing on paul ryan's economic plan as he introduced to the house last or the year before, because they think that is fertile territory to find a lot of ways to try to paint mitt romney and paul ryan as, you know, against the middle class and taxing the middle class. i think joe biden is going to wrap mitt romney and paul ryan as tightly together as possible and just sort of drop the ryan plan on top it to try to implode the pair. they think that is good ground. as far as paul ryan is concerned, i think he is kind a policy wonk. his problem is he's a numbers guy, and he's up against frankly and i think both runs previous head of the republican party and michael nutter both said that joe biden is a very accessible politician. he tends to put things the way that people get it immediately. he's just got that kind of manner about him. i think that's the -- in some ways, you know, we look at the substance and style. as far as style is concerned, i think paul ryan's fear here is he's too much of a wonk sxort of throwing out numbers. you know, you can expect jo

the smart pick, joe biden or paul ryan? who is the smart pick? >> you know, joe biden was a much better debater in 2008 than people remember. so i think if he can avoid gaffes, which is a pretty big "if" with the vp, he should be able to deliver, and paul ryan can be a little too much of a policy wonk. >> let me ask you this, do the vice presidential debates really matter? >> hardly ever, in fact, i can't think of one except the bob dole, remarking about the wars, world war i and ii, but by and large, i don't think they are much more than entertainment, although they're great entertainment. >> yes, indeed, i'm looking forward to the one years ago, that was entertaining. and larry ssabato, i have to sa thank you to you. and somebody else being featur d in politics will be after you. >>> and take a look -- >> it is your birthday, anyway, all right, you guys, good to see you both. thank you so much. and speaking of office politics, today we have former new jersey governor who discusses the policy with ronald reagan, and why in the heartland, women are going to the polls, starting with mitt

it "forewarned." with your help, paul ryan and i will get elected. [cheers and applause] you'll see enterprises a large and small decide to open their doors and expand. we will see the kind of recovery that america needs and deserves. i have confidence in the american people. i know that created and patriotic people in here. we love this country. there is no other nation on earth like it. we are an exceptional nation. i believe that. when the founders wrote that document known as the declaration of independence, they changed the world with insights that god gave us our rights and not the government. [cheers and applause] these are rights which we have. i love america. my confidence in the future comes from my passion for this country and for the people of this country. do you realize how unusual we are as a people? i do not know how it began, but it is here. it is in our hearts. some years ago when i was serving as governor of my state, the then president of israel came to boston. i happen to have a lunch with him in someone's apartment. someone said to him, "what you think about america's invo

that paul ryan and i have a plan. it is not a repeat of the last four years because we cannot afford four more years of the last four years. it is an entirely different direction. it has five different parts. number one, we will take advantage of our energy, coal, gas, oil, nuclear. the president has cut in half the number of permits and licenses on federal lands and in federal waters. i will double them. the president has made it virtually impossible to build a coal industry in this country. we have a lot of coal and i want to use it. the want thet w keystone pipeline. i will get us that oil from canada. i will open up more trade. we can trade on a fair basis with people around the world. but when people steal our jobs and trade practices as a china has, i will hold them accountable. we cannot let our jobs get stolen unfairly. i want to make sure the people have the skills that they need to succeed. i want training programs that prepare people for the jobs of today. right now have 47 different federal training programs reporting to eight different agencies. think of the overhead and the

frank. paul ryan was very frank over the weekend in saying the ticket has had a tough couple weeks. when you have a tough couple weeks you're enthusiasm level can decline. a good performance in a presidential debate can gin party enthusiasm. that may happen on wednesday for either side. we'll have to see what transpires in the debate. jenna: we always have to wait to actually talk about it until thursday morning. >> that's right. jenna: let me go back to that appearance point that you made. just by having mitt romney on stage with the president, many say that is what is going to make him look more presidential as you mentioned maybe create more support or inspire certain folks out there. "real clear politics" had an interesting article and unnamed democrat was quoted and i will quote him to you or her to you, larry because i would like your opinion on this. saying this is not a debate. this is a beauty pageant. people like a candidate through the heart, not through the mind this election is now about character and not about the economy. what do you think about, that, larry, a beauty page

. we can't afford to go back to the policie bush and dick cheney and paul ryan. but i say this as a strong obama supporter, he didn't win last night's debate. he did not meet up to our expectations. i think he let us all down. i hate to say it. look romney came to play. i think -- romney came to play and president obama stayed home. listen. i looked at it not just as an obama supporter but as somebody who loves debate and has made a living out of debating. and started out -- look, in -- i was on the debate team in high school. i the debate team -- in delaware. i was on the debate team at niagara university. when i went to college. i coached debate. my father judged high school in philadelphia. i debated on crossfire on the spin room, on msnbc. i've debated on the road with bob novack ay and bill crystal and mary madeline and you name them. armstrong williams. alan keys, i can't remember all of the conservatives i've been on the road with. so debate is sort of my thing. i'm sorry to say it, on points

of wisconsin for the recall, but he really hated teachers and people like paul ryan. he just wants to push grandma over the class, future maybe if she's lucky, and little tables and beds. i mean, this is what they want people to think of really incredibly good and intelligent conservatives. and it is so over-the-top ludicrous. now, barack obama is the opposite of all those things. he loves puppies. u.s. people. he loves rainbows. and he is a total romantic. this man knows how to wine and dine his wife. unfortunately for us usually on our tax dollars. and he can do no wrong, even after this ridiculous record, the incredible damage has been done to the united states. none of it matters because the infatuation has turned into a full-blown affair that the media has had with him. now, i know we'll have audience participation at the end of the program, but as far as i'm concerned, you should feel perfectly welcome to user noisemakers to let the world know how you feel when we give our finalists to 2012 dishonors knuckle draggers award. here we go. first nominee of the night his former cnn corres

biden and paul ryan voters will get a chance to hear what candidates have to say about a host of issues beyond budget, policy and health care. things like voting rights, women's rights, topics that were omitted last week between president obama and romney. the issue of sensible gun laws. the first presidential debate took place a short distance from aurora, colorado. a victim had a message for the candidates in an ad that airs during the debate. >> this past summer in a movie theater in colorado, i was shot. shot in the face and neck. but i was lucky. in the next four years, 48,000 americans won't be so lucky because they will be murdered with guns in the next president's term. enough to fill 200 theaters. when you watch the presidential debates, ask yourself, who has a plan to stop gun violence? let's demand a plan. it didn't get an area. joining us is comedian chris. john warner and rebecca, contributor to the magazine. i feel of two minds about the debate. focus is good. depth is good. i was appreciative they allowed depth on the issues they talked about, but frustrates there's only

if he was running for election or re-election. >> paul ryan talked about it. he says as conservatives, we are used to media bias. but the desperation of the mainstream media to re-elect barack obama has reached levels we have not seen before. i worry very much that the kind of covering up of hugely important issues, an american ambassador killed in a terror attack that the administration covered up, after it ignored that the threats that he was reporting back to washington. that's very, very serious. when have you a media that won't cover these stories, it begins to really damage, i think, the functioning of our democracy. they have an important role to play and they have abdicalletted responsibility because they have a tingle up their leg over barack obama. >> sean: i think they are the willing accomplices. i think that obama is laughing his ass off because he knows he can manipulate them and get them to say anything he wants. it's fascinating. >> and dangerous. >> sean: liz cheney, thank you. >> thank you. >> sean: coming up next, now that she is not on the campaign trail, calista g
